On Saturday we...

...went to the beach. It was a fine afternoon to hang out with Craig, Anna & Robbie on Kohi beach. No grey, damp and cloudy skies for us - just sun, sea and sand. Craig's wife Jo is in London and missing all our fun, but I'm sure she'll return with many stories of her own to share the next time we're on the beach. Jo, take a deep puff on the big smoke and come back soon!

Craig looking rather cool.

George looking very glamerous.

Robbie and Theo begin work on their sandcastle.

Robbie takes a little break.

George and Roger with another warm embrace.

The beach babes...

Anna drying in the sun after a splash in the sea.

Theo beats Roger in a beach race.

Craig watches as Robbie climbs a Pohutukawa.

Roger searches for some shade.

This is the car that Robbie (and dad) made.

Robbie knocks Roger down in his sports car.

...but Roger gets his own back.

Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve

We love exploring the local area close to home. In the Eastern Bays we're fortunate to have a number of coastal walks to enjoy and this is one of our favourites, Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve - so dramatic with the tide out.

There are plenty of sunny pools to find crabs & shells and to warm our feet.

Looking back towards Glendowie & our 'burbs.

The end of the sand-spit...?

...not quite. But we're closer to Half-Moon Bay Marina across the estuary. At certain times, when the tide is really low, the ferries can't get in & a bus service operates - not quite sure how though.

Fighting back the crowds, we returned to Glendowie & the reserve. The lagoon is barely visible on the left.

Birthday on Rangitoto

After many years of looking at Rangitoto & wondering, Hana was finally whisked away across the harbour with George, Yas & Theo to climb the volcano & celebrate Hana's birthday. We had a fabulous warm, spring day, exploring the main route. But looks can be deceiving, it's a big volcano & we didn't have time to reach the summit & see the lava caves. Read on to find out what we saw.

Our usual view towards Rangitoto, as you know.

Looking back to the Eastern suburbs of Mission Bay, Kohi & St Heliers.

The lava landscape 'beach'. There's a huge stingray in there somewhere, we glimpsed it briefly before our ferry disturbed it's peace.

The volcano (extinct of course) is about 600 years old and covered in trees & bush and is protected. It's a long way down to the ferry & we're not at the top yet.

The path has been cleared and is relatively easy to start with. It heats up nicely in the sun & stays warm, however it is not a recommended walk on hot days, unless you want to look like a prawn on a BBQ.

Yas leads the way cautiously & found the lava caves, natural tunnels & amazing to see, just as well we brought the torches to explore inside.

"Oh alright, I'll smile just for you Hana"

We're heading back down for our packed lunch, the mystery of the summit left for another day. We can't wait!

At play

A selection of photos of the kids, at their best, just using their imagination and playing. As you will see, the family has changed a little.

'....Sisters are doing it for themselves....'
And believe it or not, this was Theo's idea, which Yas readily supported, of course.

The infamous family cafe, where any drink or meal is possible & the service is first class from your adoring waiter & waitress. With every chair & table outside, menus created, table numbers, food, etc., no details were overlooked. A great place to while away a few hours with the weekend newspapers. We've recommended it for inclusion in The Good Cafe Guide.

And then there were three. Someone had the hard job of taking the photo though.

Celebrating Our First Year

We've managed to survive our first year in New Zealand. It's been the adventure we thought it would be and much more. Things are settling down and as you can see from the previous posts life is getting back to some kind of normality.

Geroge is back in the kitchen baking cakes - here's her Kiwi to celebrate our first year.

The kids at play.

The grown ups having a beer or two.

Jo and Stephen listen to George tell her tales.

Forty Years...

Oscar Wilde once said: 'wedlock is padlock' and for Hana and Matthew forty years of marriage suggest they're quite happy to have tossed the key for good. Congratualtions and you're an example to us all.

Hana and Matthew talk a walk in Auckland's Domain.

George looking rather content.

Yasmin looking like a young adult.

Roger and Matthew.
